Teaching Education

Judson College has partnered with Liberty University to offer a Master of Arts in Teaching complete with licensure. Students majoring in English, Social Studies, or Interdisciplinary Studies are eligible for this program and can complete the program in 5 years by following the recommended sequence. Judson College majors listed below correspond to the following MAT concentrations:

Judson College, BA English – MAT Secondary Ed. (Eng)

Judson College, BA Social Studies – MAT Secondary Ed. Social Studies Endorsement

Judson College, BA Interdisciplinary Studies – MAT Elementary Ed.

1. New Judson College students planning to complete the MAT should major in English, Social Studies, or Interdisciplinary Studies and should follow the recommended course sequence provided by their advisor and/or the Registrar’s office.
2. Judson College students should apply to Liberty University’s MAT program at the end of their Junior year to ensure sufficient time for application processing. Students are accepted as “undergraduate special student status” (non-degree seeking) until their bachelor’s degree is conferred by Judson College. Students may take courses during this time, but they will not qualify for financial aid through LU.
3. Upon acceptance from LU, Judson College students should complete the following 9 hrs through LU during their Senior year:
   1. EDUC 500 Advanced Educational Psychology
   2. EDUC 606 Tests & Measures
   3. EDUC 521 Foundations of Exceptionality
4. Following the completion of the bachelor’s degree from Judson College, students request an update in student status from LU and apply the above courses toward the completion of the MAT degree.
5. Students follow the LU course sequence to complete their degree as suggested by the LU School of Education, https://www.liberty.edu/online/masters/teaching/

Transfer students should consult with their advisor and/or the Registrar’s office to determine the best route toward completing the program.

Judson College and NC State University have developed a program that allows students to transition seamlessly from their undergraduate program at Southeastern to the Master of Arts in Teaching at NC State. Within 5 years, you can earn a bachelor’s degree from Southeastern and a master’s degree from NC State. The programs below require the following courses of study.

MAT Elementary Grades K-6 – Any undergraduate degree from Southeastern

MAT Middle Grades Social Studies – Degree in social science content, such as History or Political Science

MAT Secondary Social Studies – Degree in Social Science content, such as History or Political Science

MAT Middle Grades English/Language Arts – Degree in English

MAT Secondary English/Language Arts – Degree in English

1. New Judson College students planning to complete the MAT at NC State should major in English, social studies or interdisciplinary studies if they intend to pursue licensure at the middle school or secondary levels. Students interested in licensure to teach at the elementary level are free to pick any major.
2. Judson College students should apply to NC State’s MAT program during their junior year to ensure sufficient time for application processing. Students are accepted as “non-degree seeking” students until their bachelor’s degree is conferred by Judson College. To begin the process of applying to NC State, students should first contact either Dr. Micha Jeffries (if interested in elementary education) at [email protected] or Dr. Drinda Benge at [email protected].
3. During the spring semester of their senior year at Judson College, students will take two courses at NC State. Following the completion of the bachelor’s degree from Judson College, students must request an update in student status from NC State and apply the above courses toward the completion of the MAT degree.
