John W. Burkett
The major in English promotes an understanding of literature, trains students to think critically and write effectively, and encourages them to reflect on the central issues of the human condition-all from a Christian perspective. Core curriculum classes in composition emphasize the skills of effective research and writing. English major classes expose students to the breadth of English studies by focusing on literature, literary theory, writing, and linguistics while recognizing the depth of the Christian literary tradition from the literature of the Bible to major Christian authors throughout the centuries. Students who major in English will be equipped to understand culture, think critically and creatively, and communicate the gospel to others clearly and effectively.
