“Marked for Death! Messengers of Life!”: A Sermon on the Judsons by Danny Akin

"Marked for Death, Messengers of Life"

The story of Adoniram Judson powerfully displays the faithfulness of God to sustain his people and use them for the purposes of his kingdom. In a biographical sermon series given during the fall of 2007, President Danny Akin presented a chapel message examining the lives of Judson and his family through the lens of Romans 8:28-39.

As Akin notes, in the way of older sermon titles, he named it: “Marked for Death! Messengers of Life! Paul’s Powerful Promises Applied Particularly to Those Who Long for the Salvation of the Lost with Insights from the Life and Ministry of Adoniram Judson and the Three Mrs. Judsons – Romans 8:28-39.”

Weaving together the historical narrative of the Judsons’ lives with biblical exposition, Akin draws out four promises for the children of God:

  1. We have his providence (8:28-32)
  2. We have his prayers (8:33-34)
  3. We have his power (8:35-37)
  4. We have his promise (8:38-39)

“I believe,” Akin says, “these four promises enabled Adoniram Judson to stay with [his missionary] assignment to the last day of his life.”
