Why Study Business at Judson College?

Judson College students have a deep desire to represent Christ in each area of their lives, giving their lives for the cause of Christ in the church, among the nations, and in every aspect of society. As one of Judson’s marketplace degrees, the Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) specifically prepares students to serve as gospel witnesses on mission in the workplace, honoring Christ with excellence and proclaiming him in both word and deed.

Most people spend more than a third of their lives in the workplace, explained Professor of Business Craig Williams. As a result, not only is the workplace a mission field ripe for the harvest, but also it’s a significant part of life for almost every believer, either as an employee or a leader.

“The vocations will differ,” said Williams. “You might be in ministry; you might be working for a church or with a church; you might be working in a parachurch organization. Or you could be in any business: large corporations, small businesses, or starting your own as an entrepreneur.”

“Our program,” he explained, “is about preparing you for that world, equipping you with the knowledge and skills to be successful: the fundamentals of running a business, managing finances, accounting, marketing, working with other people effectively, and other areas critical to success.”

The world of business requires a wide range of practical skills and knowledge — including a crucial relationship element.

Benjamin Green, one of Williams’ students and a freshman in the BBA program, was surprised and encouraged by this revelation when he first came to Judson.

“So often when you think of business, especially as a highschooler,” Green explained, “you think of financials and sitting in an office, but there’s so much more to it. The thing I’ve come to greatly appreciate is learning about management and being a leader and how they complement each other.”

Leaders have countless opportunities to demonstrate the love of Christ in difficult times; as such, Green explained, even his actions towards others can serve as witness opportunities.

Williams agreed. He’s seen many young leaders pursue the final outcomes — the end goal — over everything else. While important, these outcomes are always fleeting.

“Over time,” he explained, “you learn that really the only thing you’re going to leave this world with, the only thing that’s going to last, is the impact you’ve had on other people.”

Judson College’s BBA is currently in its third year of existence. Williams, who serves as the coordinator for business programs, is eager to see the degree equip hundreds of students for the work of leadership and business over the coming years.

As a generalist degree, the BBA is designed to provide students with a comprehensive skill set and working knowledge of the business world.

As such, Williams explained, “What we’re prioritizing is the core areas in business that are essential to success — not only the people side but also the fundamental skills associated with things like accounting, finance, supply chain, and more. So, we’re working on building a program that is robust. It’s rigorous, and our graduates are going to have those fundamental skills necessary to be successful in any business or organizational setting. Our focus is building that knowledge and skill base within the foundational context of a biblical worldview.”

It’s this biblical worldview that shapes and informs each aspect of Judson’s marketplace degrees, teaching students to live for Christ in every moment of their lives.
“Whatever vocation you pursue, whether it be business or education or something else,” Williams said, “you’re going to have that biblical worldview, that grounding in your training, and you’re going to approach working life as a mission and as a mission field.”

For Green, and the rest of Judson students, a Christ-centered approach to education isn’t merely a bonus. It’s the priority.

“When I was looking at colleges,” Green said, “I wanted to go to a Christian school that built on my faith and that was built on the Scriptures. And then seeing that Judson had a business program that I could apply both in a secular setting and a church setting — that was just something that blew me away. That’s why I chose Judson.”
